Summary of M.S Thesis (English Version)

Under an open-distributed environment, we cannot take account of
all situations that certain problem-solving systems, what we call
agents, will be confronted with, when designing and constructing
those systems. Therefore a notion of "evolutionary agents" be-
comes more and more important. On the analogy of evolutionary
theory, the adaptation of such agents under a certain environment
can be viewed as two complementary phases, each taking place in
the different levels: 1) "learning", occurring within each indi-
vidual life, and 2) "evolution", occurring in a history of popu-
lation. Due to the biological background, most of the previous
researches on these two processes were based on the models of
Darwinian-style evolution. From the viewpoint of engineering,
though some previous work have shown the increase in the speed of
adaptation for Lamarckian-style evolution, they have not make
thorough comparison with the Darwinian-style. And what is worse,
these work have considered only the static environment where cer-
tain rules that agents had to learn were permanent, and they have
not discussed the dynamic situation that is one of the most im-
portant characteristics of the real-world. In this thesis, we re-
gard an abstract neural network as a learnable agent and use
genetic algorithms to evolve the populations of such agents. And
we evaluate the characteristics of two different mechanisms of
genetic inheritance, that are "Darwinian-style" and "Lamarckian-
style". Particularly taking the dynamic characteristic of en-
vironment into consideration, we evaluate the effect of learning
on adaptability, speed of adaptation, and robustness of agents
under each genetic mechanisms.
We mainly show the following results. Firstly, we show that
"Baldwin effect", addressing that individual learning indirectly
guides the evolutionary process, does not always occur especially
when agents must learn difficult rules, while the effect has been
confirmed by many previous work. Secondly, we show the results of
comparison between the two different genetic mechanisms. In stat-
ic settings, Lamarckian-style mechanism is more effective than
Darwinian-style one. However, in dynamic settings, Darwinian-
style mechanism functions successfully, while Lamarckian-style
one perform poorly.
Although we use many biological terms in this thesis, the most
essential matters are the processes of "collecting", "exploit-
ing", and "transmitting" information. Therefore, the results of
this thesis can give some useful suggestions, when we design and
construct certain intelligent systems such as multiple-agent sys-
tems that will be used under the open-distributed environment.
